Why Get a Second Opinion?
Technological advances today make it difficult for patients to understand the implications of surgery or interventions procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, pacemaker implantation, ICD implantation, medical management only, evaluating complex data.
These procedures are not without risk. The risk benefit ratio is very important and needs to be discussed individually. Individualized education of case is very important. Just because the procedure can be performed does not mean it needs to be performed. The justification needs to be laid out and the benefits that the patient is going to accrue needs to be laid out clearly. The expectations must be discussed clearly. Sometimes certain interventions are not appropriate for a particular patient. Some patients best treated with a conservative approach. Sometimes there are other noninvasive alternatives available to patients.
Why is a Second Opinion Important?
Second Opinions these days are more desirable than before because of the mandates of insurances to only go to certain providers and obtain only their opinion. The patient is always encouraged to get a second opinion for anything that is invasive and anything that may be potentially life-threatening.
Giving a second opinion involves not only looking at the cardiac issues at hand but also looking at the overall patient to see whether that treatment modality fits the patient profile. This requires an in-depth knowledge of the disease processed, the patient’s current condition, and also the risks of the procedures. The judgment that is required comes after many years of experience. Experience brings wisdom.
Cardiovascular Interventions Second Opinion Program
Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, M.D.
MBBS, FACC, FSCAI, FCCP, FACP
With this in mind, Cardiovascular Interventions has now developed a program for second opinions. The second opinion is given by Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, MD. During this visit he will evaluate all the medical records pertaining to the issue at hand and discuss the symptoms, findings and give you a direct opinion as to what the next step should be.
By creating this program, we hope to also alleviate anxiety and stress about decision making. Remember entering into any major surgical procedure or intervention procedure with a lot of anxiety and stress will impact on the outcomes. Often times the peace of mind that the patient gets from obtaining a second opinion will truly pave the way for a better outcome.
We encourage patients to get a second opinion and if you feel that you need one, please call our coordinator.
